Glabellar lines are wrinkles that appear between the eyebrows. They are often referred to as frown lines as frowning makes their appearance more prevalent.
Glabellar lines may appear as a single vertical line or as two or more lines and may also appear angled towards the inner corners of the eyebrows.
Glabellar lines are normally treated with a series of BOTOX® wrinkle relaxing injections.
Botulinum toxin type A is injected into the skin causing local relaxation of the muscles.

Crows feet are a series of upper facial lines or wrinkles that appear around the outside of the eyes and are associated with squinting. They are commonly referred to as crows feet due to formation of tangent lines from the eyes. Crows feet become more prevalent with age, due in part to the changing elasticity and densities of the skin.
Crows feet are normally treated with a series of BOTOX® injections. Botulinum toxin type A is injected into the skin causing local relaxation of the muscles responsible for the lines and wrinkles.

Forehead lines are associated with the action of raising one’s eyebrows. The frontalis muscles of the forehead contract in an upward direction causing the skin to crease. Forehead lines become more prevalent with age due in part to the changing volumes and elasticity of the skin.
BOTOX® wrinkle relaxing injections are a highly effective way to treat forehead lines. Botulinum toxin type A is commonly injected into the skin at the forehead to relax the frontalis muscles. The result is a natural and more youthful appearance where moderate forehead lines are diminished.

WHAT IS BOTOX®?
BOTOX® (Botulinum toxin Type A) is a highly purified protein, non-surgical injection, which may be used to temporarily reduce the appearance of some lines and wrinkles. Once injected into the skin it relaxes the muscles and causes it to become weakened or inactive.
WHAT PROBLEMS WILL BOTOX® TREAT?
In addition to over 180 medical uses, BOTOX® has many cosmetic uses, including treatment of frown lines, worry lines across the forehead, crow’s feet lines, certain lines around the mouth, and excessively sweaty armpits, palms, and feet. In some patient’s relief from migraine headaches is an added benefit.
HOW LONG HAS BOTOX BEEN IN USE?
As long ago as 1978, Botox was used as a treatment for patients with eye squints by weakening the overactive eye muscle. Since then, it has been used in a variety of therapeutic areas such as the spasmodic neck, writer’s cramp, tics, multiple sclerosis, facial spasm, Parkinson’s Disease and cerebral palsy, to name but a few. In more recent times the use of Botox for cosmetic therapy has become more widespread.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Botulinum toxin has been in medical use for more than four decades, and it is administered in such a way that it only affects your muscles and sweat glands – it does not reach any other part of the body. As long as it is administered by a qualified medical professional, the risks are extremely minimal. Side effects of this treatment are rare. Most people find that the injection causes only mild discomfort. Immediately after the injection, there may be mild swelling, which usually subsides in 48 hours.
Occasionally a temporary drooping of the eyelid can occur. This may last a few weeks, but will always resolve. Special eye drops can be prescribed during this time to help lift the lid back into the normal position. In extremely rare cases patients have developed an allergy to the treatment, while others have shown resistance, i.e. it causes little or no effect on treated muscles.
CAN YOU BECOME IMMUNE TO BOTOX?
Theoretically, but patients who receive BOTOX® frequently for one or two years typically require less BOTOX® each time.
WHO SHOULD NOT USE BOTOX?
If the injection site is infected
You have a known allergy to any of the ingredients
You are pregnant or breastfeeding
You have a neuromuscular disorder (e.g. myasthenia gravis)

DO THE INJECTIONS HURT?
An extremely fine, short needle is used to inject the Botox into the appropriate area. This may cause some slight but brief discomfort. The area may have some slight redness and swelling, which normally resolves in an hour or two.
WHAT DOES A BOTOX TREATMENT INVOLVE?
Procedure time – Typically 30 minutes
Following consultation assessment and informed consent, the procedure takes about 5 to 10 minutes. The practitioner will ask you to use certain muscles of the face to observe how they work.
An extremely fine, short needle is used to inject the Botox into the appropriate area. This may cause some slight but brief discomfort but you will be able to return to work immediately. After treatment you should not massage the injected area, lie down for four hours after treatment, go to a solarium or do vigorous exercise, a post-treatment information sheet will be provided.
The treatment normally starts to take effect after 4 to 14 days, but this may vary slightly with some individuals. The effects will normally last between 2 and 6 months when you will start to notice an ability to move the muscles more freely.
WHICH AREAS CAN BOTOX TREAT?
Mostly, the top half of face where wrinkles are deepened by smiling and frowning. However, Botox also corrects crow’s feet, forehead lines, bunny lines, vertical neck bands, grooves above the upper lip, orange peel chin and gummy smiles.
Botox is also a very effective treatment for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in the armpits or hands.
