FAQ

WHAT CAN DERMAL FILLERS DO?

Fillers are mainly used to reduce the signs of ageing. They can also be used to correct some scars, plump up the lips or correct asymmetries of the face by adding volume. Ageing of the face consists of both fine lines forming and the contours of the face changing. Different fillers are used to address both these problems, for instance, thicker products such as Juverderm Voluma are used to volumise the cheeks while a thinner product such as Juverderm Volbella is used to treat fine lines.

WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) which occurs naturally in the body. Approximately 56% is found in the skin. Hyaluronic acid is important because one of its chief functions in the human body is maintaining skin volume and hydration.
In medicine, hyaluronic acid has been used to ease joint pain, treat wounds and in eye surgery. It was used for the first time in 1996 in Europe for facial tissue augmentation.
It is essential for holding together collagen and elastin fibres within the dermis, giving the skin its natural, youthful-looking elasticity to accommodate movement of joints and muscles. As we age the molecular composition of the skin changes as does the density of hyaluronic acid contained within the skin.
The resulting loss of volume exhibits the characteristic lines and wrinkles, sagging cheeks, jowls and jawline associated with ageing parts.

HOW LONG DO DERMAL FILLERS LAST?

Fillers last between 6-24 months depending on the product used and the area it is used in. One of the great advantages of dermal fillers is that the effects are long-lasting but not permanent. The length of the treatment depends on a number of factors including:

• Age
• The area you have had treated
• Quantity of dermal filler injected
• Quality of skin
• Lifestyle
• Healthiness

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF DERMAL FILLERS?

The most common side effect is temporary discomfort and possible bruising and swelling. With the gentle technique, we aim to keep bruising and swelling to a minimum. It is best if you don’t exercise just before and after your treatment and avoid aspirin or anti-inflammatories for two weeks before treatment if you want to minimise bruising.

WILL DERMAL FILLER TREATMENT HURT?

Our recommended dermal filler, Juvederm Ultra has an in-built anaesthetic called lidocaine which enhances comfort. In addition, we apply an anaesthetic cream to make your treatment as comfortable as possible. As with any medical procedures, a small amount of discomfort may be felt.

CAN EVERYBODY USE DERMAL FILLERS?

Most people can benefit from dermal fillers treatment. If you wish to reduce lines and wrinkles, create more defined or fuller lips, define the contours of your face, or boost your skin’s vitality, for a healthier more hydrated skin tone.
Dermal fillers should not be used in or near areas where there is or has been skin disease, inflammation or skin related problems. Dermal fillers have not been tested in pregnant or breast-feeding women, Individuals with medical conditions that lower the body’s immune response or individuals undergoing therapy that is immunosuppressive may be more prone to infection by a skin injection procedure.
During your consultation, our practitioner will carry out a full medical assessment and discuss your needs for treatment.

WHAT DOES DERMAL FILLER TREATMENT INVOLVE?

  • During the consultation, you will be asked what your wishes and expectations from treatment are. After discussion of what you wish to achieve and assessment of your treatment needs, Denise will recommend which treatment is most suitable for you, ensuring you are fully informed, some clients may need more time to consider and rebook a further appointment.

  • After the consultation, and if you are happy to proceed, you complete a medical assessment and you will need to sign a consent form before treatment can progress.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING TREATMENT?

Initially, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the area that is to be treated and left to work for 20-30 minutes.
The dermal filler is injected into the skin in small amounts using a very fine needle. The gel provides natural volume to smooth away the appearance of lines and wrinkles, enhance facial shape, or create fuller lips. Dermal fillers improve the elasticity and texture of the skin, restoring and maintaining the skin.
The treatment time can vary depending on the area being treated.

WHEN WILL I SEE THE EFFECTS OF MY DERMAL FILLER TREATMENT?

Immediately

ARE DERMAL FILLERS SAFE?

Yes. Only 1 in 20,000 treatments result in an allergic reaction. Although dermal fillers can be reversed using another injection, this requirement is extremely rare.

WHAT DO I NEED TO CONSIDER AFTER THE DERMAL FILLER TREATMENT?

There is no recovery time with dermal fillers, so you can immediately resume normal daily activities. As with Botox, patients should avoid excessive alcohol, exercise or sun for the first 24 hours. You will be provided with a DC Cosmetic post treatment information sheet.

CAN DERMAL FILLERS BE USED WITH BOTOX?
